For the first time I saw a squirrel in our yard, and it was a black one! We live in the middle of woods, in a big open field but we never get squirrels. Deer, skunks, turkeys, birds, but never squirrels. There is too much tall meadow grass and nothing for the squirrels to eat (i.e. nuts).
He was really furry and digging for something in the front yard. I wish he would have stayed longer but he dashed across the drive and into what “woods” we do have near our house.
Someday I’d love to have a whole bunch of nut trees so we’d get squirrels all the time, just like at the old house. But even at the old house we never got black squirrels.
(Christine thinks I Photoshopped the squirrel, but I swear, that’s really him!)
The first and only time I ever encountered a black squirrel was on the Kent State campus when my son was there. We thought it was some experiment gone wrong… ha I’ve never seen one since but they do exist.

They’re all over the national park area. But we never had them up “north”.
